The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly weighing the possibility of extending veteran catcher J.T. Realmuto’s contract to bolster their roster stability.

Realmuto, who has been integral to the team’s success, could sign a three-year extension worth $50 million to maintain his effective partnership with ace pitcher Zack Wheeler.

Matt Davis of This Ball’s Outta Here, via The Sporting News, emphasized the importance of retaining Realmuto despite his advancing age and recent struggles.

Davis noted that while Realmuto endured one of his least productive offensive seasons and underwent knee surgery in June, he remains a crucial asset behind the plate. The proposed deal would secure Realmuto until 2028, bridging the gap until top prospect Eduardo Tait is MLB-ready.

In 2024, Realmuto delivered solid numbers, recording a .266 batting average with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs. Defensively, his .995 fielding percentage showcased his reliability. Backup Garrett Stubbs offers defensive promise but lacks Realmuto’s offensive impact.

With few immediate catching prospects, the extension would ensure continuity for the Phillies, allowing Realmuto to mentor younger players while potentially contending for another playoff run.

The deal could serve as a strategic move to align the franchise’s short-term needs with its long-term goals.
