As the Philadelphia Phillies prepare for the National League Division Series (NLDS), the final decision on their pitching roster remains uncertain.

With the opponent still undetermined, the Phillies’ choice may depend on whether they face the Milwaukee Brewers or the New York Mets, with matchup considerations playing a significant role.

Right-hander Taijuan Walker is expected to be left off the postseason roster, while left-hander Tyler Gilbert is ineligible due to roster rules, having been optioned on September 29.

Among the key candidates for the final pitching spot are left-hander Kolby Allard and right-handers Max Lazar and Spencer Turnbull. Allard, with his 2-0 record and 5.00 ERA in 2024, brings versatility and experience in long relief.

He could be crucial if the Phillies require a fourth left-handed reliever, as his stats in relief suggest he can fill that role effectively. Lazar, who posted a 4.61 ERA in 11 games, may be considered for an extra right-handed arm but had an inconsistent finish to the season. Turnbull, though recovering from injury, is another contender with strong numbers, including a 2.65 ERA across 17 appearances.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson remains cautious about Turnbull’s readiness, but the decision will likely hinge on his recovery and the opponent’s roster composition.
