Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson shared insights into the team’s postseason roster after securing a playoff spot.

Speaking to reporters, including Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Thomson indicated that the team is likely to adopt a 12-man pitching staff and expand its bench for the playoffs.

The bench will likely include key players like Garrett Stubbs, the backup catcher, and utility infielder Edmundo Sosa. However, three bench spots remain open, with candidates including Kody Clemens, Weston Wilson, Cal Stevenson, and possibly recently optioned infielder Buddy Kennedy.

Outfielder Austin Hays, currently recovering from a kidney infection, is also a notable candidate. Although he has been on the injured list for most of September, Hays began a rehab assignment with the Phillies’ Triple-A team. Despite missing game action, Thomson expressed confidence that Hays will be ready for the postseason if the Phillies secure a bye through the wild-card round.

This would allow Hays to participate in intra-squad games, providing him with needed at-bats before the National League Division Series (NLDS).

Hays, who was acquired from the Orioles in a midseason trade, has been a valuable asset against left-handed pitching, with a notable 166 wRC+ against righties this season. He could be a crucial platoon partner for Brandon Marsh, who has struggled against same-handed pitching.

The Phillies face tough decisions regarding the final bench spots, with Stevenson and Clemens being strong contenders due to their recent contributions. Additionally, right-hander Spencer Turnbull, recovering from a lat strain, could return to the team during the postseason after a rehab assignment.

Meanwhile, top pitching prospect Andrew Painter continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery and may participate in the Arizona Fall League.
