The Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive line has faced significant challenges during the preseason, and the unit’s struggles have been compounded by injuries and absences.
While uncertainty at the quarterback position has been a major talking point, the offensive line’s inability to effectively block the Raiders’ formidable defensive line has also contributed to the team’s sluggish start.
Two key players, left tackle Kolton Miller and rookie guard Jackson Powers-Johnson, were notably absent from the line, leaving gaps that the team has been working to fill. On Tuesday, the situation became more complicated when starting right tackle Thayer Munford Jr. suffered a hand injury during practice, casting doubt on his availability.
The team received mixed news: Powers-Johnson was cleared to return to practice, albeit in a limited capacity, while Munford’s finger injury sidelined him. With rookie DJ Glaze already working with the first team at right tackle, Munford’s absence opens the door for Glaze to potentially secure a starting role.
However, head coach Antonio Pierce surprised many by indicating that Powers-Johnson might not start in Week 1, as they plan to ease him back into action, with veteran Cody Whitehair currently holding the starting left guard position.
The Raiders’ offensive line is dealing with a lot of moving parts, and while the team boasts depth and versatility, the lack of cohesion among the starting five is a concern.
The sooner the full starting unit can practice together, the better their chances of building the chemistry needed to protect the quarterback and establish a strong offensive front.
