On Wednesday, the Las Vegas Raiders made significant roster moves, parting ways with Jimmy Garoppolo and Hunter Renfrow, alongside two other players, Brian Hoyer and Jerry Tillery.
This decision, announced on the inaugural day of the new league year, freed up an impressive $19 million in salary-cap space for the Raiders.
The release of Garoppolo was anticipated, especially after reports emerged of the Raiders’ agreement with Gardner Minshew, a free-agent quarterback, on a two-year, $25 million deal.
This move signaled a transition, with Minshew potentially providing competition for Aidan O’Connell, particularly if the Raiders fail to secure a quarterback in the upcoming draft.
Garoppolo’s tenure with the Raiders, marked by a one-year stint, concluded following a disappointing season under new head coach Antonio Pierce.

Garoppolo’s time with the Raiders was plagued by challenges, mirroring the start of his journey with the team when he had to undergo left foot surgery before his contract could take effect.
Throughout the season, the veteran quarterback battled injuries, including a concussion and a back injury, limiting his on-field appearances to just seven games.
His performance during this period hit career lows in completion percentage, passer rating, and QBR.
The decision to release Garoppolo was also influenced by financial considerations, as it coincided with the impending deadline for his $11.25 million roster bonus and allowed the Raiders to save his guaranteed base salary.
Moreover, Garoppolo’s two-game suspension due to a violation of the league’s performance-enhancing drugs policy further contributed to the rationale behind his release.
In essence, Garoppolo’s departure from the Raiders marks the end of a challenging chapter for both the player and the team, characterized by unmet expectations and financial considerations.
Garoppolo’s exit interview.
“I just want to get back to playing, honestly, That’s why I play this game. … I love to win.”
” Honestly, what I think I’m here for is just to go out there and get wins. As a football player, it’s something you’ve got to embrace. Not everyone wants that. Some people just want statistics and things like that. I really just want to go out there and win. I really enjoy doing it. That’s what we’re here for.”
Renfrow’s departure follows his first Pro Bowl selection, which occurred two years after his standout season, during which he secured 103 receptions for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns.
Following that performance, Las Vegas extended his contract for two years and $32 million, including $21 million guaranteed.
However, his performance declined significantly in 2022 and 2023, with only 61 receptions for 585 yards and two touchdowns combined during those seasons.
Renfrows Message of appreciation on X.
“Raider Nation, thank you for welcoming me and my family in the last 5 years,” Renfrow said on X. “From Oakland to Vegas it felt like home. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without my teammates and coaches inspiring me every single day. 5 years went by quick…… ‘Once a Raider Always a Raider.'”
