The Las Vegas Raiders’ decision to stick with Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew at quarterback this offseason has yielded mixed results, leading to concerns about their readiness for the upcoming season.

Both quarterbacks are currently locked in a battle for the starting position, yet neither has managed to decisively claim the role. Training camp has been marked by inconsistent performances, with both players struggling and throwing numerous interceptions.

Quarterback is arguably the most crucial position in the NFL, and without solid play there, the Raiders could face significant challenges in securing victories. Despite limited options in free agency or on the trade market, the team seems likely to continue evaluating O’Connell and Minshew during preseason. However, if their performances don’t improve, the Raiders may need to explore alternative solutions.

One possible option is former Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who remains a free agent.

Tannehill, a former Pro Bowler, had a tough 2023 season and was eventually benched. Despite this, his past success, including a Comeback Player of the Year award and a Pro Bowl selection in 2019, could make him a potential candidate if the Raiders’ current situation becomes dire.

However, signing Tannehill comes with risks. At 36, his age and injury history are concerns, and his mobility is limited compared to Minshew. While Tannehill boasts a respectable 81-70 record as a starter, his recent decline raises questions about whether he would be an upgrade over the current quarterbacks.

Head coach Antonio Pierce acknowledged the differences between O’Connell and Minshew, noting O’Connell’s classic dropback style and accuracy, contrasted with Minshew’s savvy and mobility. As the preseason progresses, the Raiders must carefully assess whether to stick with their current options or consider bringing in a veteran like Tannehill to bolster their chances in the 2024 season.
