During the first day of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams emerged as significant winners, successfully drafting highly-touted edge rusher Jared Verse with the 19th overall pick.
The Rams’ front office, led by Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay, are expected to heavily promote Verse as a premier pick in the coming weeks, though it was revealed that he was not their top choice.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Rams had been actively exploring options to move up from their 19th pick, reflecting their strong interest in another undisclosed player.
Los Angeles Rams Tried Trading Up For Brock Bowers
However, their efforts to trade up halted abruptly when the Las Vegas Raiders selected Brock Bowers at the 13th spot.
Bowers, a player heavily linked to the Rams in the buildup to the draft, was evidently a high-priority target for McVay, who was looking to bolster the team’s offensive capabilities.

Despite missing out on Bowers, the Rams managed to address a critical need in their roster by securing Verse, who is set to play a vital role in filling the gap left by the retired Aaron Donald.
This strategic pick aligns with the goals of Chris Shula, the Rams’ new defensive coordinator, aiming to rejuvenate the team’s pass rush.
The draft dynamics were also tense for other teams, as the Indianapolis Colts were similarly positioned to make a move up in the draft order.
Like the Rams, the Colts shifted focus after Bowers was off the board, eventually selecting UCLA’s edge rusher Laiatu Latu with the 15th pick.
This selection suggests that Latu could have been another potential target for the Rams, indicating a competitive drafting environment with several teams vying for top defensive talents to enhance their squad’s performance for the upcoming season.
