The 2024 NFL Draft had its share of surprises, and one of the biggest was the Last Vegas Raiders selecting tight end Brock Bowers with the No. 13 pick.

Bowers, a standout from Georgia, was unexpectedly still available, and the Raiders’ decision to choose him was notable, considering they had drafted tight end Michael Mayer in the second round the previous year.

According to the June 14 episode of the Roku Channel’s “NFL Draft: The Pick Is In,” the Los Angeles Rams made a significant effort to trade up for Bowers. The Rams, positioned at No. 19, were eager to secure Bowers and offered the Raiders a deal.

General manager Les Snead proposed to Raiders GM Tom Telesco a swap that would allow the Rams to move up to No. 13 in exchange for their No. 52 pick, while also asking the Raiders to return their fourth-round pick, No. 112.

Despite the enticing offer, Telesco declined, ending the Rams’ pursuit of Bowers. The Rams also attempted similar trade negotiations with the New York Jets, but to no avail. Their persistent efforts underscored the high value they placed on Bowers.

Reflecting on the trade offer, some analysts believe the Raiders might have benefitted from accepting the deal.

Moving down six spots while gaining an additional second-round pick could have been advantageous, particularly as no cornerbacks had been selected by the time the Rams would have picked at No. 19. The Raiders could have addressed their need for a top cornerback while acquiring extra draft capital.

Nevertheless, the Raiders’ choice to retain their position and select Bowers highlights their confidence in his potential. Given Snead’s reputation as one of the NFL’s top general managers, his interest in Bowers suggests that the Raiders made a sound decision. This revelation counters any narrative that the Raiders panicked during their selection process.

The Raiders’ commitment to Bowers, despite their pre-existing depth at tight end, indicates their belief in his exceptional talent and potential impact.

Head coach Antonio Pierce, while addressing concerns about the team’s early offensive struggles in minicamp, emphasized that the offense is progressing as expected for a team with a new coordinator and head coach.

As the Raiders prepare for the upcoming season, their strategic draft choices and the intrigue surrounding their decisions will be pivotal.
