Real Madrid is edging closer to securing Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich as contract negotiations between the Canadian full-back and the Bavarian club stall.
According to Spanish outlet AS, the 23-year-old has attracted the interest of several top European clubs, but Real Madrid appears to be leading the race for his signature. Bayern Munich, in turn, is seeking around €50 million for the transfer.
Davies has made a significant impact since joining Bayern Munich from Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2019.
Initially playing as a pacy winger, he has successfully transitioned into a dynamic full-back over the past five years, although he continues to take on more advanced roles when playing for Canada. Over his tenure with Bayern, Davies has made nearly 200 appearances, contributing 11 goals and 31 assists, showcasing his offensive and defensive prowess.
Despite his success, Davies faces an uncertain future as he approaches the final year of his contract, which has not yet been extended.
This contractual impasse has drawn the attention of major clubs across Europe, particularly in the Premier League. However, Real Madrid has emerged as the frontrunner, as Davies reportedly favors a move to the Spanish giants over other potential suitors.
Real Madrid’s interest in Davies aligns with their long-standing pursuit of a new left-back. Although Ferland Mendy has been a consistent performer, Real Madrid has continued to explore options to bolster their squad in this position.
The latest developments suggest that Davies’ ongoing contract issues with Bayern have brought Real Madrid a step closer to finalizing the deal. Nonetheless, the financial aspects of the transfer could pose a challenge, with Bayern Munich’s €50 million asking price exceeding Real Madrid’s preferred range by €10-15 million.
If Real Madrid manages to negotiate the fee down or agrees to meet Bayern’s demands, Davies could soon don the iconic white jersey, marking a significant move in the summer transfer window.
