Former Wales rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit is on the verge of signing with a new NFL team after being released by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Rees-Zammit, who made headlines earlier this year by transitioning from rugby to American football, was one of several players cut by the Chiefs as they trimmed their roster to 53 players before the league’s deadline.
Having entered the NFL as a free agent, Rees-Zammit has quickly drawn interest from other teams. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Jacksonville Jaguars are reportedly close to securing a deal with the former wing, though it remains unclear whether this would be for a spot on the main roster or the practice squad.
Rees-Zammit’s time with the Chiefs was brief, as he only managed six carries for 22 yards and one catch for three yards across three preseason games. Despite these modest stats, his performance caught the attention of multiple NFL franchises.
If the Jaguars’ deal goes through, Rees-Zammit will join a competitive backfield, including players like Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby. This move follows his surprising switch from rugby, where he had enjoyed significant success with Wales, to the NFL, where he hopes to carve out a new career path.
