Boston Red Sox fans have been eagerly awaiting updates on Vaughn Grissom, their new second baseman, throughout the season.
Despite facing two strained hamstrings and a bout with the flu, the 23-year-old is currently on a rehab assignment with the WooSox. However, even after his rehab ends, Grissom might not return to the major league roster.
Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports that the Red Sox may option Grissom to Triple-A when his 20-day rehab assignment concludes on August 9. This decision is unexpected given the team’s anticipation of his return.
Boston’s management has concerns about Grissom’s readiness to perform after months on the sidelines, fearing he won’t be able to play at his best during a critical postseason push.
Manager Alex Cora expressed that the Red Sox plan to be patient with Grissom, confident in his abilities but waiting for him to be at his peak. However, this move leaves the Red Sox without a right-handed bat they had expected. As the trade deadline approaches, the team may need to prioritize acquiring another right-handed infielder.
Previously focused on bolstering their pitching with trades for James Paxton and Quinn Priester, the Red Sox now face an urgent need to add a right-handed hitter to their lineup if Grissom remains in Triple-A.
