In an unexpected turn of events, All-Star guard Klay Thompson has left the Golden State Warriors after a remarkable 13-season tenure.
Thompson, who played a pivotal role in securing four NBA championships for the Warriors, has signed a three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks.
This move was part of a historic six-team sign-and-trade deal, which also involved the Charlotte Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, and Minnesota Timberwolves. The Warriors received sharpshooter Buddy Hield and forward Kyle Anderson in return.
Thompson’s departure from the Warriors marks the end of an era. Despite his impressive recovery and solid performance last season, where he averaged 17.9 points per game, tensions had been brewing.
Reports indicate that Thompson felt undervalued by the Warriors, who were unwilling to offer him a long-term contract similar to those given to Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins. This disagreement over contract terms, combined with the Warriors’ assessment of his post-injury performance, led to the mutual decision to part ways.
The Mavericks are enthusiastic about adding Thompson to their roster, seeing him as a key player to support their star Luka Doncic.
Meanwhile, the Warriors will look to retool their team around Stephen Curry, with Hield and Anderson expected to bring new dynamics to the court. As the new NBA season approaches, all eyes will be on Thompson to see how he adapts and performs with his new team.
