Just a few years ago, Josh Christopher was a highly-touted high school basketball recruit destined for Arizona State. By 2021, he was the Houston Rockets’ first-round pick.
Fast forward to 2024, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound guard finds himself fighting for another chance in the NBA. After spending the past season in the G League, the 22-year-old has been working tirelessly with the Miami Heat since May.
Christopher, who remains unsigned, has fully embraced the Heat’s development program.
“Just to do what I’m asked and show I trust them,” he shared about his experience.
His dedication has started to pay dividends, especially noticeable during the Las Vegas Summer League games. Christopher shone brightly, scoring 20 points in the first game against the Celtics and 23 points in the second game against the Thunder, making a notable impression on the NBA community.
Heat’s summer league head coach, Dan Bisaccio, lauded Christopher’s work ethic, stating:
“He’s worked incessantly behind the scenes.”
The Heat has challenged him to enhance his defensive skills and three-point shooting, aiming to mold him into a reliable NBA role player.
Christopher’s journey has been tumultuous, from being a first-round pick to being waived by multiple teams. His resolve remains unwavering. “I’m extremely hungry,” Christopher said, emphasizing his commitment to returning to the NBA. His relentless work ethic, exemplified by late-night shooting sessions, has earned respect, including praise from NBA veteran Jamal Crawford.
As Christopher continues to prove his worth, the Heat may need to make roster adjustments to offer him a spot. Regardless, his determination to reclaim his place in the NBA remains clear:
“I know I belong. I’m extremely hungry.”
