Coco Gauff, last year’s US Open champion, is facing significant challenges ahead of the 2024 tournament.
Former tennis star Andy Roddick expressed doubts about her ability to defend her title, suggesting that her current form might not even carry her to the quarterfinals.
On his podcast, “Served with Andy Roddick,” he predicted Gauff would be eliminated by Elina Svitolina in the third round. Despite acknowledging his bias in favor of Gauff, Roddick emphasized the importance of current form in his analysis.
He noted that while Gauff defeated Svitolina earlier this year, the latter has been performing better recently. Roddick stated, “I like Svitolina to round four,” indicating his belief that Svitolina will outlast Gauff in their potential matchup.
Roddick’s skepticism is rooted in Gauff’s recent struggles, including losses to Diana Shnaider and Yulia Putintseva. He reflected on how strong Gauff was last year but pointed out her recent difficulties, saying:
“Great players go through stages where they’re searching for it.” Given these circumstances, he concluded, “I don’t think she’s going to make the quarters.”
