Team Canada NextGen member Shauna Liu of Maple, Ontario, clinched victory at the 69th Canadian Junior Girls Championship, presented by BDO at Marine Drive Golf Club in Vancouver, B.C. on Thursday.
Liu, who entered the final round tied for the lead, delivered a stellar performance, shooting a 1-under 71 to finish 2-under for the tournament, outpacing Clairey Lin from Palos Verdes Estates, California, by three strokes.
Liu’s final round was marked by consistent play. Despite an early bogey, she rebounded with a birdie on the par-5 second hole and maintained a bogey-free back nine, highlighted by two consecutive birdies. The 15-year-old golfer posted rounds of 70-71-74-71 to secure her national title.
“It’s an incredible feeling,” Liu remarked. “Winning this tournament has always been a dream, and it feels amazing to achieve it. My family and I will probably celebrate with some ice cream.”
In addition to the Junior division, Liu triumphed in the Juvenile division, which is contested by girls aged 16 and under, again finishing ahead of Lin. Ruihan Kendria Wang from Bellevue, Washington, took the bronze medal at 3-over.
In the Junior division, the bronze medal was shared among three players: Jasmine Kartusch, Ruihan Wang, and Vanessa Zhang from Vancouver, B.C., all finishing at 3-over.
Liu’s victory grants her exemptions into the 2024 Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship at Royal Colwood Golf Club in Victoria, B.C., and the 2025 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship. She also receives a $1,200 CAD prize.
Notably, Liu joins a prestigious group of past Canadian Junior Girls Champions, including Eileen Park (2023), LPGA stars Brooke Henderson (2012), and Alena Sharp (1999), and Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Sandra Post (1964-66).
Team British Columbia, consisting of Ha Young Chang, Amy Seung Hyun Lee, and Chelsea Truong, won the Inter-Provincial Team Championship, finishing eight strokes ahead of Team Manitoba.
