Darnell Washington and Calvin Austin III, vastly contrasting in size, are evolving into impactful offensive players for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Their roles have expanded significantly since quarterback Russell Wilson joined six weeks ago. Over the past five games, the pair has combined for 21 catches on 34 targets, 314 yards, and three touchdowns, filling critical gaps behind primary options George Pickens and Pat Freiermuth.

In the Steelers’ 24-19 loss to Cleveland, Austin led the team with 78 receiving yards, including a 46-yard third-down grab and a 23-yard touchdown.

“He did a great job of getting open,” Wilson said of Austin’s key plays. “He made a heck of a catch and route.”

Austin’s three touchdowns over five games, including a punt-return TD, lead the team, while his receiving scores tie with Pickens and Freiermuth for the season.

Washington, a towering 6-foot-7 tight end nicknamed “Mount,” has demonstrated vertical prowess. Steelers tight ends coach Alfredo Roberts said:

“He’s shown he can be consistent in the passing game.”

Washington’s 11 receptions in five games with Wilson nearly double his 2023 total.

Both players, mid-round picks with unique traits — Austin’s agility and Washington’s size — have dispelled doubts about their viability as receiving threats.

Their emergence highlights how offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is leveraging their contrasting skills to diversify the Steelers’ attack.

Coach Mike Tomlin commended Austin for his ability to “create space in a non-vertical area,” while Washington noted, “Each catch builds my confidence.” Together, they’re transforming into versatile assets for the Steelers.
