Steve Cooper has been announced as Leicester City’s new manager, signing a three-year contract that extends until 2027.
The 44-year-old former Nottingham Forest boss replaces Enzo Maresca, who left to manage Chelsea after securing Leicester’s promotion to the Premier League.
Cooper, who has been out of work since his emotional departure from Nottingham Forest in December, brings a wealth of experience and a notable track record.
At Forest, he achieved a significant milestone by guiding the team back to the top flight after a 23-year absence and successfully maintaining their Premier League status.
In an open letter to Leicester fans, Cooper expressed his pride and commitment to the club’s storied history.
“I am very proud to be joining a club with a rich history,” he wrote. “I congratulate the players and staff on their promotion to the Premier League. I know how hard that is. The Premier League title of 2016 and the FA Cup of 2021 have demonstrated what’s possible for a united club. As the new manager, I don’t take that legacy lightly.”
Cooper emphasized his dedication to building on Leicester’s recent successes and bringing together players, staff, and fans.
“My job will be to build on those achievements and to bring everyone along – players, staff, and fans. Great challenges lie ahead, but I get the feeling that Leicester thrives in these moments. I know we will be ready,” he added.
However, Cooper’s tenure is expected to face challenges, including a potential points deduction and the necessity to sell players to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.
His first match in charge will be a home game against Tottenham, coincidentally the same team he faced in his final game with Nottingham Forest. Cooper will also make an anticipated return to the City Ground in May.
Other candidates that were considered for the role included former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter and West Brom’s Carlos Corberan, but Cooper ultimately secured the position.
