Former Celtic winger Jota, who transferred to Al-Ittihad for £25 million last summer, is reportedly eager to return to the Scottish club.

The 25-year-old Portuguese star has faced challenges adapting to the Saudi Pro League, prompting speculation about his future, as reported by Saudi news outlet TV 24.

Jota’s stint in Saudi Arabia has been less than stellar, with the winger managing just five goals in 29 appearances across all competitions last season. Despite his efforts, Al-Ittihad failed to secure any trophies, adding to the dissatisfaction with his current situation.

Jota recently expressed his regret to fans, acknowledging the team’s shortcomings and vowing to improve:

“We apologise to the fans for leaving the King’s Cup and the rest of the tournaments. We have to improve ourselves. We will work to correct the results in the upcoming matches.”

Celtic initially brought Jota in on loan from Benfica in 2021, before making the move permanent. During his time at Celtic Park, Jota was a standout performer, scoring 28 goals in 83 matches and playing a crucial role in the club’s successes, which included two Scottish Premiership titles, a Scottish Cup, and a League Cup.

Under the guidance of then-manager Ange Postecoglou, Jota developed significantly, which Postecoglou himself acknowledged:

“Jota in his career before he got to us wasn’t going on the trajectory he wanted. He made the decision to come here, work hard at his game, and improve, and he is.”

Jota’s career began at Benfica, where he progressed through the youth ranks to make 33 appearances for their first team and also spent time on loan at Real Valladolid in Spain. His potential return to Celtic could be a significant move for the club, though his current wages might pose a challenge.

Celtic, who have yet to make any signings this summer under new manager Brendan Rodgers, are reportedly taking a measured approach to their recruitment strategy.

They are focused on securing the right players to defend their title after finishing ahead of Rangers last season. Whether Jota will make a dramatic return to Glasgow remains to be seen, but his potential comeback is already generating excitement among fans.
