The OKC Thunder’s recent acquisition of Isaiah Hartenstein has caught the attention of Boston Celtics reporters, who now view Oklahoma City as a formidable contender for the 2024-25 season.

Hartenstein, who averaged under eight points per game in his two seasons with the New York Knicks, was signed for nearly $30 million over three years. This move required the Thunder to outbid the Knicks, who were financially constrained due to OG Anunoby’s extension.

Hartenstein’s addition addresses a critical need for the Thunder, who struggled at the center position during the Western Conference Semifinals against Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II.

Despite not being a high scorer, Hartenstein’s fit alongside OKC’s core players, including Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, makes him a valuable asset. CelticsBlog’s Noa Dalzell and MassLive’s Brian Robb both acknowledge the enhanced threat that OKC now poses to the Celtics.

Meanwhile, the Knicks, who were close to facing the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals, aim to stay competitive with the return of Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson, along with the acquisition of Mikal Bridges. Injuries hampered their playoff run last season, but they hope to challenge the Celtics’ dominance in the East.

The Celtics also face potential challenges from the Philadelphia 76ers, who signed Paul George, and the Milwaukee Bucks, who will have Giannis Antetokounmpo back from injury. As the new season approaches, the battle for supremacy in the NBA looks more intense than ever.

The Celtics’ pursuit of their 19th championship banner will undoubtedly be tested by these emerging threats.
