Tiger Woods, one of golf’s most iconic figures, has been awarded a lifetime exemption to compete in the PGA Tour’s eight ‘signature’ events.

This prestigious honor comes in recognition of Woods’ remarkable achievements on the American-based circuit, where he holds a joint-record of 82 victories, including 15 major titles.

The PGA Tour announced this exceptional acknowledgment through a statement, which revealed an “adjustment” to the signature events series.

The new rule introduces a sponsor exemption for lifetime achievement, specifically for players with 80 or more career victories, to honor Woods uniquely.

At 48 years old, Woods continues to be the most influential figure in golf, despite a significant reduction in his appearances due to ongoing health issues.

This year, Woods has participated in only four Tour events and did not make the cut at both the US PGA Championship in May and the US Open last week.

The signature events series, established in the current year, comprises eight of the Tour’s most lucrative tournaments outside the four major championships and playoffs.

These tournaments are designed to feature the top players in the sport, ensuring high-quality competition and substantial financial rewards.

Looking ahead, the Tour has confirmed that starting next season, these limited-field tournaments will include a minimum of 72 players. This change aims to enhance the competitiveness and appeal of the signature events, ensuring they remain a highlight on the golfing calendar.

Woods’ lifetime exemption not only celebrates his extraordinary career but also ensures that fans can continue to witness his legendary presence in some of the most prestigious events in golf.

This special recognition underscores Woods’ indelible impact on the sport and his status as one of the greatest golfers in history.
