Tiger Woods is reportedly set to be named Team USA’s next Ryder Cup captain, a significant announcement that may be made just before The Open Championship at Royal Troon.

According to SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio host Jason Sobel, Woods is the leading candidate to replace Zach Johnson.

Johnson’s tenure ended in disappointment when Team USA was defeated by Europe 16 ½ – 11 ½ last September. His leadership faced criticism, particularly over his preparation strategies and key decisions, such as resting star players Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas in the opening session, which the team lost 4-0.

Woods, now 48, had previously distanced himself from the captaincy due to his role in the PGA Tour’s negotiations with LIV Golf.

However, he recently confirmed that the PGA of America has allowed him the flexibility to consider the captaincy. Despite no rush from the PGA of America to appoint a successor, with Europe already having Luke Donald as their captain, the announcement of Woods could energize the team ahead of next year’s competition at Bethpage Black in New York.

Woods’ Ryder Cup history is notable, with eight appearances between 1997 and 2018 and a record of 13 wins, 21 losses, and three halved matches. He served as a vice-captain in 2016 and was slated to do so again in 2018 before receiving a wildcard to play. Absent from the 2021 Ryder Cup due to recovery from a car accident, Woods has nonetheless remained a significant influence, sending support to the team during their competitions.

Other candidates considered for the role include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Fred Couples, and Steve Stricker, each bringing valuable experience and leadership qualities. However, Woods’ potential appointment stands out due to his immense influence and storied career in golf.

As the golf world awaits the official announcement, the potential of having Tiger Woods lead Team USA brings excitement and high expectations for the upcoming Ryder Cup.
