Even though Nick Saban is no longer the head coach of Alabama football, his influence continues to shape the 2024 team.

Saban’s presence is particularly felt through Kane Wommack, the Crimson Tide’s new defensive coordinator. Wommack, who previously served as the head coach at South Alabama, has been appreciative of the guidance he’s received from Saban as he transitions into his new role in Tuscaloosa.

Wommack highlighted that one of the unexpected aspects of his new position has been Saban’s willingness to offer support and share his wealth of experience.

Saban’s expertise, especially on the defensive side of the ball—a realm he mastered during his time at Alabama—has been invaluable to Wommack. This assistance has significantly eased Wommack’s learning curve as he adapts to the responsibilities of leading Alabama’s defense.

The two have met in person several times since Wommack took on the role of defensive coordinator. Wommack emphasized how Saban’s availability has been particularly noteworthy, mentioning that Saban always finds the time to answer his calls.

This ongoing mentorship has been something Wommack deeply values, underscoring the lasting impact Saban continues to have on the program, even from a distance.
