In an unfortunate turn of events, Whit Merrifield, who was recently acquired by the Atlanta Braves to bolster their injury-riddled roster, suffered an injury within his first hour with the team.
The Braves, dealing with significant injuries to key players such as Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ozzie Albies, brought Merrifield on board in hopes of shoring up their lineup. However, during his first practice session on Monday, Merrifield took a ball off a finger on his right hand while fielding grounders.
Braves manager Brian Snitker confirmed the incident to reporters, highlighting the team’s ongoing streak of bad luck. X-rays revealed no fractures, but Merrifield is now listed as day-to-day.
This injury adds to the Braves’ mounting challenges as they strive to remain competitive despite a string of setbacks. Merrifield, who was cut by the Phillies on July 12 after a disappointing first half of the season, is batting just .199 with a .572 OPS. The Braves still hope he can regain his form and contribute significantly in 2024.
