Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, two of the top golfers in the world, will not be participating in the John Deere Classic this weekend.
Their absence comes as both players strategically manage their schedules ahead of The Open.
McIlroy, the world no.2, is taking a break after a disappointing finish at the US Open, where he lost to Bryson DeChambeau. Reflecting on the loss, McIlroy expressed his determination to focus on the positives and rebuild his form. He announced a three-week break from golf to recover and prepare for the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon.
In a heartfelt message on social media, McIlroy congratulated DeChambeau on his victory and acknowledged his own mistakes, particularly two missed putts that cost him the title. Despite the setback, McIlroy remains optimistic about his career and is committed to bouncing back stronger.
Scheffler, the world no.1, is also taking a break, having recently won the Travelers Championship. With 15 events and six victories under his belt this year, Scheffler is being selective about his tournament participation to ensure peak performance at major events. He plans to compete in the Genesis Scottish Open before heading to Royal Troon for The Open, where he aims to secure his first win.
Additionally, Scheffler is gearing up for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, representing the United States alongside Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, and Wyndham Clark.
Both McIlroy and Scheffler’s strategic breaks highlight the importance of careful scheduling in professional golf, as they aim to be in top form for the significant upcoming tournaments. Fans can look forward to seeing them compete again in Scotland, where they will continue their pursuit of major titles.
