Reports suggest that Todd Boehly’s tenure as Chelsea chairman might conclude in 2027 due to a contractual agreement with Clearlake Capital.
Boehly, an American entrepreneur, joined Chelsea as a co-owner in the BlueCo consortium alongside Mark Walter, Hansjörg Wyss, and Clearlake Capital for the 2022/23 season.
Chelsea currently sits in 11th place in the Premier League, trailing 19 points behind the Champions League qualification spots.
Despite the team’s struggles, they had a chance to salvage their season in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool, but suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Wembley.
Chelsea’s remaining hope lies in the FA Cup, where they are set to face Championship leaders Leicester City in the quarter-finals later this month.
Speculation is rife that Pochettino’s future at Chelsea hinges on winning the FA Cup, as reports indicate the club’s patience with the former Tottenham Hotspur manager is wearing thin.
According to a report by Matt Law for The Telegraph, Boehly’s tenure as Chelsea chairman could potentially conclude in 2027.
Matt Law’s report for Telegraph.
‘Chelsea’s owners can pass the chairmanship of the club between them every five years as part of an extraordinary written agreement. Telegraph Sport can reveal some of the previously unknown details of Chelsea’s Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital ownership, which includes the option for the club’s chairmanship to be shared between them.
‘Boehly has been chairman since the current owners bought the club in 2022, which means Clearlake Capital, who are owned by Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano, will have the opportunity to nominate their own representative in 2027.
‘The agreement is an option, rather than an obligation, and Boehly could remain as chairman for another five years in 2027 should Clearlake decline the opportunity to take over. Were Clearlake to take the chairmanship, then Boehly would be able to reclaim it in 2032.’
‘Law has also pointed out that Boehly currently ‘has no plans to pass up their chairmanship early’.
‘Those close to him insist Boehly has no plans to pass up the chairmanship early as a result of the criticism he has faced and do not believe doing so would ease any of the pressure on him.
‘Eghbali and Feliciano have so far preferred to work in the background, out of the public spotlight, but whether or not either man could continue to do that as chairman is debatable.
‘While Eghbali is more engaged in the day-to-day running of the club, Boehly’s power has not been diluted by his decision to step back from matters that he feels can be managed by those employed to do so and every big decision requires the signature of each man.’
