In the evolving landscape of Alabama football, new defensive positions dubbed “Wolf” and “Bandit” have been introduced under the guidance of the new defensive coordinator, Kane Wommack, who was brought in by head coach Kalen DeBoer following Nick Saban’s departure.
These roles are part of Wommack’s “Swarm” defense, which aims to intensify Alabama’s defensive strategies.
The Wolf position, which adapts traditional edge rusher roles, has players like Que Robinson and Keanu Koht at the forefront. Christian Robinson, the assistant coach responsible for this new position, emphasized that while the Wolf role incorporates some new elements, it retains the fundamental techniques seen in past Alabama defenses under Saban.
Players in this role are expected to be versatile, excelling both in pass rush and run defense, with a focus on athleticism and flexibility at the line of scrimmage.
Meanwhile, the Bandit position blends the responsibilities of a defensive lineman and an edge rusher. Jah-Marien Latham and LT Overton are among those adjusting to this hybrid role, which requires not only rushing the passer but also dropping into zone coverage—an added layer of complexity compared to previous schemes.
Latham, who previously focused solely on edge rushing, now practices zone integrity to enhance his versatility on the field.
These changes mark a significant shift in Alabama’s defensive approach, with the coaching staff eager to see how these new roles will influence their overall strategy in the upcoming season.
