Chelsea has been handed huge injury boost as captain nears return

Chelsea’s captain, Reece James, inches closer to his comeback from a prolonged injury spell, marking a significant development for the Blues.

The club revealed on Friday that the right-back has resumed team training, following a five-month absence due to a hamstring surgery.

Despite featuring in just eight Premier League matches this season, James now eyes a potential role in the team’s final three fixtures.

His return could also serve as an opportunity to stake a claim for inclusion in the Euro 2024 squad, albeit with slim chances.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino expressed optimism about James’s potential availability for their upcoming clash against Nottingham Forest.

“We need to see today but maybe he can be available in the squad, yes.

Pochettino emphasized the importance of having the captain back, underscoring his value both on and off the pitch.

“The most important thing is that he is going to be with us. Always to have your captain is a massive boost for any team. We have an amazing relationship and he is amazing player.

“It’s not easy when you come back from a long-term injury. The most important thing is for him to be available and be part of the squad and if he can play five, 10, 15 or 30 minutes it will be amazing. It’s unlucky there are only three games left.”

He praised James’s qualities as a player and highlighted the challenges of returning from a long-term injury.

Lesley Ugochukwu Returns to full training.

Joining James in the return to team training is Lesley Ugochukwu, whose last appearance dates back to Christmas Eve when he sustained a hamstring injury.

Additionally, goalkeeper Robert Sanchez edges closer to completing his rehabilitation, having participated in partial team sessions. This progress notably reduces Chelsea’s injury list to just six players, with Sanchez among those still recovering.

The recent returnees, Levi Colwill, Malo Gusto, and Christopher Nkunku, who featured in the win against West Ham, vie for starting spots in the upcoming fixtures.

However, Enzo Fernandez, Wesley Fofana, Carney Chukwuemeka, Romeo Lavia, and Ben Chilwell remain sidelined, adding to the ongoing challenges faced by the squad.

As Chelsea navigates the final stretch of the season, the return of key players like Reece James offers a glimmer of hope for a strong finish and potentially augments their prospects in upcoming competitions.
