Jordan Pickford, known for his heroics in past penalty shootouts, is rigorously preparing for potential spot-kick duties at Euro 2024.
The England goalkeeper, who famously scored and saved a penalty in a thrilling 6-5 shootout win against Switzerland in the 2019 Nations League, is leaving no stone unturned as he practices both saving and taking penalties in training.
Pickford is determined to be ready if England faces another shootout in the knockout stages. He expressed his willingness to step up if called upon by manager Gareth Southgate.
Reflecting on his past experience, Pickford said:
“I’d step up. I’m not the manager, but I’d be prepared if it came to that. Everyone has to practice them because anybody could be on the pitch at any given time. The history of winning major tournaments shows that you’ve got to go into extra time sometimes and maybe win a penalty shootout.”
Pickford’s past shootout successes include helping England beat Colombia 4-3 on penalties at the 2018 World Cup, securing the Three Lions’ first World Cup penalty shootout victory. His decisive role in the 2019 Nations League, where he became the first England goalkeeper to take and score a penalty in a competitive shootout, has solidified his reputation as a reliable penalty taker.
As Euro 2024 approaches, England’s preparations are in full swing, with Pickford’s dedication underscoring the team’s commitment to being ready for any scenario.
