Rangers are considering the possibility of signing Steven Alzate on a free transfer following his release from Brighton, according to Derek Ferguson.

The Colombian international, who spent seven years with the Seagulls, became a free agent last month and was previously linked with a move to Ibrox in the winter.

Ferguson believes that Rangers have thoroughly evaluated Alzate, especially given their recent dealings with Brighton, such as the loan acquisition of Abdallah Sima last season. With a pressing need for quality midfielders, Ferguson is confident that if Rangers are interested, they will pursue Alzate.

Ferguson told Ibrox News: “We need good players. There’s an existing relationship with Brighton, as evidenced by our loan deal for Sima. They would have done their homework on Alzate, and there’s obviously something they like about him.”

He emphasized the importance of signing durable players who can handle the physical demands of the Scottish league, stating:

“We need players who can play 30 or 40 games a season. The midfield suffered numerous injuries last season. We can’t afford to bring in injury-prone players; we need robust players suited for our league.”

Ferguson also highlighted the unique pressures of playing for Rangers:

“It’s not just about being a good footballer. Handling the constant pressure and high expectations in Glasgow is crucial, especially with Celtic currently dominating.”

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has already seen key midfielders John Lundstram and Ryan Jack depart and signed former Aberdeen youngster Connor Barron to fill the gap. However, more reinforcements are needed. A potential move for Norwich City’s Kenny McLean is uncertain, making Alzate a viable option if Rangers decide to proceed.
